Musto vs Mystic Tomato

Post by xavouine on Fri Apr 12, 2013 8:30 pm

I had an argument with someone about this ruling and there seems to be no help to be found online.

So this is the situation : I activate Musto's effect on my opponent's, Mystic Tomato.

Now, he claims tomato's effect activates in the grave, therefore, it can search. I tell him that in the grave or not, its effect is still negated until the end phase. Who is right ?

You are right, the effect is negated period, if there was a stipulation claiming the effect was negated until it hits the grave then it would say "It's effect(s) on the field are negated until the end phase"

I disagree.
From what I've found, there was a similar argument concerning Effect Veiler VS Sangan, and the answer was that once Sangan has left the field, effect Veiler no longer negates it, even though Effect Veiler never states "It's effect(s) on the field are negated until the end phase".

A ruling for Effect Veiler, just to prove my point.
"This card will negate effects that activate or apply on the field. It will not negate an effect that activates in the Graveyard.[1]"
http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Card_Rulings:Effect_Veiler

Here is Veiler's text.
"negate that target's effects until the End Phase."

Here is Musto's.
"negate the second target's effects until the End Phase."

the card texts are nearly identical, and it is 'in my opinion' logical that their effects act the same way. Therefore, I believe Xavouine is wrong, and Mystic Tomato's effect WILL still activate and resolve.

Koalaman has a point. There's a difference between effects that activate on the field but resolve while the monster is in the grave and effects that activate in the grave. For example, Stardust Dragon/Assault Mode will lose his effect from Neo Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon, but Mystic Tomato will not. I made that mistake and it was painful using up my partner's Stardust Assault mode for no reason.

Bottom line, it all depends on the timing of activation and resolution and in this case, your opponent was right.
